Sporting Heroes
"The hero shows us what we ought to be, and we make him a hero because we wish to be what he is." Richard C. Crepeau, Sport, Heroes and Myth, Journal of Sport & Social Issues, Vol. 5, No. 1, 23-31 (1981) more hero quotes
What makes a Hero?
What makes a hero can be something quite specific to an individual. I believe that it is not just sporting prowess, and maybe not sporting ability at all. It is their sporting ability that puts them in the limelight, but it is what they do once there that can make them stand out as a hero. Here are some of the attributes, other than skill, that I think should be considered for labeling someone as a sporting hero.
- they know they are a role-models and act accordingly.
- they strive to be a positive influence in the community.
- they have the money to do whatever they want to do, but chose to give some of it back to the community.
- they have good family relationships and other people relate well with them.
